TE Vernon Davis
RE: What happened before you left the field?
“I made a play, tapped the guy on his chin â€" I didn’t mean anything by it â€" but they called a flag. He was talking trash, of course. I didn’t take it personally â€" I wasn’t swinging or anything. I just did like this. I came back to the sideline and Coach [Singletary] said, ‘Vernon, you can’t do that, you have to be smart.’ Coach Singletary told me to go sit down, and after a while, he told me to just take a shower and take it in. He’s a good coach. Coach Singletary is an emotional guy, just like myself. He wants to win, and I did exactly what he told me to do. He is the head coach, and I listen to him. He just told me to come in, and I went in.â€
RE: What was he talking to you about when he sat next to you on the bench?
“He was just talking about the game. He said, ‘Vernon, you’ve got to be smart. You can’t do things like that.’ I guess he didn’t see what happened out there. I didn’t swing at the guy. He saw from afar, and he probably couldn’t tell what happened. He’s the head coach. I have to listen to him. Whatever he tells me to do, I have to do.â€
RE: What did Brian Russell say to you?
“He just said, ‘Good play, try again, try harder.’ Something like that. It didn’t really bother me.â€
RE: And then, you gave him a little tap on the chin?
“I tapped his facemask, and then…I didn’t say anything. We didn’t exchange words or anything.â€
RE: Do you think giving you a flag was a bad call?
“Yeah, I really think it was a bad call. I really think it was a bad call.â€
RE: What did Coach Singletary say to you in the locker room?
“He didn’t say anything. He just said, ‘We have to play together. Just be smart.’â€
RE: Did it surprise you that he pulled you off the field?
“Yeah, it did. I didn’t know what was going on. I already know about Coach Singletary. He wants to win, and he’s a hard-working guy. He won’t tolerate anything.â€
RE: So, Coach Singletary asked you to leave the field?
“Yeah, he asked me to come inside and cool down.â€
RE: And you didn’t try to argue with him?
“No, not at all. He’s the head coach. I have to do anything he says to do.â€
RE: Do you think you did anything wrong?
“No. Not in my eyes. I don’t think I did anything wrong. If the coach thinks I did something wrong, then I have to listen to him. He’s the boss.â€
