SI's Trotter picks Hawks to win NFC West

During training camp we usually get several national media folks making their rounds to NFL camps stopping in Seattle.

The first one to hit the Seahawks camp was Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter, who actually got his start in the business at The Tacoma News Tribune.

I had a chance to sit down and talk with Trotter after the team’s first practice on Friday, and Trotter believes Seattle can return to its winning ways and reclaim the NFC West crown if they stay healthy, and actually picks them to win the NFC West this year.

“The key issue with this team from everything that I’ve seen is health,” Trotter said. “If they stay healthy, this is a talented lineup, particularly offensively when you look at the skill positions.”

Trotter also expects the Arizona Cardinals to struggle a bit coming off their Super Bowl run from last season.

“I think the Cardinals are tremendously talented,” Trotter said. “But a lot of times what happens to teams, particularly ones with young players, is when they sudden success the next year they’ll struggle some, because they’re used to being the hunted instead of the hunter. So it’s not the players are any worse, it’s just a different mindset.”

Trotter was particularly impressed with tight end John Carlson and wide receiver Nate Burleson on offense, and thought Walter Jones moved well after coming off microfracture knee surgery.

Trotter’s headed to Flagstaff, Ariz., to check out the Cardinals today.
