Bill Vinovich to referee Super Bowl 49; worked two Seahawks games this season, both Seattle wins

The NFL announced today Bill Vinovich is the referee for Super Bowl 49 between the Seahawks and Patriots on Feb. 1 in Glendale, Arizona.

Vinovich has been an NFL referee since 2004. This is his first Super Bowl. He was a side judge when he entered the league nine seasons ago.

Vinovich worked two Seahawks games this season. His regular-season crew, different from his at the Super Bowl that will be from the top ratings tier at each officials' position, called seven penalties on Seattle in its home win over Denver in September. Vinovich also worked the Seahawks' win at Philadelphia in early December; Seattle had eight penalties that day.

He also refereed two Seahawks games in 2013: their win at Atlanta that season when Seattle had nine penalties and the home win over Jacksonville when the Seahawks had four fouls.

Vinovich was the referee for the Baltimore-at-New England game in the AFC divisional playoffs two weeks ago, won by the Patriots at home 35-31.
