Matthews up from PS; Seahawks born 40 years ago: NFL picks Week 14: Packers keep rollin', Cards keep fallin'

En route to Philadelphia. The Seahawks finally filled that spot on the 53-man active roster that's been open since rookie linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis went on injured reserve eight days ago. The signed wide receiver Chris Matthews off their practice squad. That doesn't necessarily mean Matthews is going to be one of the 46 players active for tomorrow's game at Philadelphia, though.

Exactly 40 years ago yesterday, the NFL and commissioner Pete Rozelle awarded a Seattle consortium led by chief financial backer Lloyd W. Nordstrom a pro-football franchise that became today's Seahawks.

Get this, the franchise's fee for entering the NFL on Dec. 5, 1974: $16 million. Or about two seasons of Pete Carroll today.

Here's how the "online encyclopedia for Washington state history" remembers it.

Here you go, not at all by popular demand, one man's view of how this NFL weekend will go (as always I'll save the Seahawks' pick for game day tomorrow).

The first games are the ones being televised in the Seattle-Tacoma-Everett market:

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, 10 a.m. Sunday, Channel 7

Against a good team, winning record? Ben Roethlisberger and friends only lose to horrid squads. Like the Jets.

Steelers 19, Bengals 16

Indianapolis at Cleveland, 10 a.m. Sunday, Channel 13

The tabloids salivating for Johnny Manziel. Browns would get what they deserve if they yank Brian Hoyer so quickly again.

Colts 31, Browns 17

New England at San Diego, 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Channel 5

Another mini slide for the Tom Bradys. Philip Rivers makes Chargers feel like it’s September again.

Chargers 27, Patriots 24

Atlanta at Green Bay, 5:30 p.m. Monday, ESPN

Packers are hotter than burnt Bratwurst. Oh, and it’s only partially true the Falcons could lose out and still win NFC South.
