Here's some of what Dan Quinn had to say Monday:(On the drafted rookies…)
(On Jesse Williams…) The awesome thing for him is that there have been no setbacks. I’ve seen the quickness there and the strength all the way back dating from his Alabama days. I’m really encouraged with what we’ve seen from Jesse. You can tell how big and strong the guy is just by looking at him. For him to be out here and be pain-free and playing it’s awesome for us. … I know that the guy is incredibly tough and tried to gut it out and play and go as long as he could. But for him to be out here and play with good feet and pain-free it’s been a real nice addition for us. … He’s a little lighter now too, and he looks a little quicker on his feet. That’s one of those things that adds to his foot quickness when you see him in there. … This guy has the flexibility to play our nose (tackle) or our three (technique), so we’ve tried him there this spring and we know he can play a number of spots with us.
(On Greg Scruggs…) The thing I noticed most about him is that he has the ability to play more than one spot. In base, we can put him at defensive end and in nickel we can put him at defensive tackle. It’s good to see him back out here. There’s a number of guys that we redshirted last year that didn’t get a lot of turns and playing time so this spring they’ve been anxious to show how hard they’ve worked and Greg is one of those guys.
(On Jackson Jeffcoat…) At Texas, we thought he had a good get-off and had speed to use that length. For him, he’s been one of those guys that we talked about earlier, the speed in the practices has really helped him get in good shape. He’s jumped out to me as a pass rusher first. We’re just trying to get all those guys acclimated as quick as we can. You know us, we like pass rushers.
(On mix-and-matching talent…) We’re just trying to find what unique stuff a certain player has, and then how we can feature and highlight that. If a guy can be really strong in our base package, like Jesse (Williams), Tony (McDaniel) and Brandon (Mebane), we’re going to try to highlight that. If a guy has some pass rush ability, like a Jackson Jeffcoat and Benson (Mayowa), let’s try to highlight ways to do that. That’s our challenge as coaches to learn the players well enough to know what they’re strengths are so now we can utilize them at their best too.
(On Tharold Simon…) It’s almost like getting another draft pick for us this year playing outside. When you stand next to him you see how tall Tharold is. I wasn’t quite sure what his speed was until we got the chance to see him out here and run with some of the guys on offense who can really go. To see him staying on top and playing you can feel his speed. For him to be out here playing pain-free and playing fast, we’re really encouraged.
