Schneider extension flew under radar

John Schneider has gladly appeared in front of the cameras to announce contract extensions for players through his three years as Seahawks general manager, but he kept a low profile when his own contract was extended.

Mike Sando at ESPN.com’s NFC West blog just filed this report on the contract status of divisional coaches and GM. In the Seahawks’ section, he writes:  “Coach Pete Carroll’s five-year deal runs through the 2014 season. GM John Schneider initially signed a three-year deal through 2012. Schneider and the Seahawks quietly extended his contract through 2016. The deal has been done for more than a year, without fanfare. Carroll would seem to be in line for an extension over the next year or so.”

Along with Carroll and the scouting staff, Schneider has helped the Hawks go from 5-11 to 11-5 in three seasons, with a roster expected to challenge for NFC supremacy this fall.

On the day he was brought in in January 2010, former Seahawk CEO Tod Leiweke said what he found most impressive was the immediate connection between Schneider and Carroll.

"Most compelling for me is the amazing energy I saw between the man to my right and man to my left," Leiweke said, sitting between Carroll and Schneider. "They connected, they saw eye to eye and they had a similar philosophy on how they wanted to do this."

That certainly has been the case.
