The Seattle Seahawks waived defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer today, first reported by Jason La Canfora of NFL.com.
A former first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2008, the Seahawks received Balmer in a trade with the 49ers during training camp last season by giving up a sixth round pick in this year’s draft.
Balmer served as serviceable depth for Seattle last season, with Red Bryant, Colin Cole and Brandon Mebane missing a combined 18 games along the defensive front line last season.
Balmer started 11 games and finished with 43 tackles last season. But the Seahawks brought in several players to bolster the defensive line, including Jimmy Wilkerson and Jay Alford in free agency, along with drafting Pep Levingston in the seventh round, so Balmer was the odd man out.
