I just wanted to provide you with a couple updates from Auburn quarterback Cam Newton and Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallet’s pro day.
Mallet ran a pedestrian 5.37 in the 40-yard dash, slower than any other quarterback at the combine.
Scouts are more concerned with how he throws the ball, and Mallet did that well a couple weeks ago at the combine. But it does tell you want kind of athlete he is. For some perspective, top offensive tackle prospect Anthony Castonzo of Boston College ran a 5.23, so that’s a pretty slow 40 time really for any player on an NFL football field.
Auburn’s pro day is still going on right now. They haven’t started the football-specific drill work yet, so I believe Newton has not thrown the ball around. Newton will stand on his times at the combine and will not run the 40-yard dash or other events and will just throw.
