Thursday injury report: Okung sits out again

It doesn't looked good for rookie offensive tackle Russell Okung to play this week. For a second straight day the Oklahoma State product did not practice, making it likely he will miss a second straight start this week against the New York Giants.

Okung was one of seven Seahawks' players who did not practice on Thursday. Others include Tyler Polumbus (knee), Michael Robinson (hamstring), Colin Cole (ankle), Golden Tate (ankle) and Mike Williams (thigh)

Of course, Matt Hasselbeck (concussion) is out.

Defensive tackle Brandon Mebane (calf) returned to practice this week and was a limited participant.

Chris Spencer (neck), Chris Clemons (coach decision) and Jordan Babineaux (illness) also returned to practice as full participants on Thursday.

Charlie Whitehurst took all of the snaps with the first unit and looked comfortable throwing the ball and running the team today. Offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates said the offense will not change with Whitehurst at the helm, and that he's anxious to see how he plays on Sunday.

"Being a backup quarterback is a tough position because it's more mental," Bates said. "You're not physically getting the plays in practice, so during the course of a game when something happens you've got to step up and play like you've been practicing for weeks. So he's had a good week this week, and we look forward to seeing him on Sunday."

The last time Whitehurst played extensively for Seattle was during the preseason. And he had an uneven performance during exhibition play, finishing 46 of 90 for 635 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. Whitehurst only completed 51.1 percent of his passes, was sacked four times and finished with a 70.4 passer rating.

"I thought he threw the ball well," Bates said. "He was able to get out of the pocket and kept improving. I thought he had a successful preseason. He threw a couple picks that you want to take back, but he needs experience. And this is a good opportunity to really get in there and see what he can do in a regular season game when the starters are in there for both sides."

For the N.Y. Giants, OT Will Beatty (foot), C Shaun O'Hara (foot), FB Madison Hedgecock (hamstring) and DE Dave Tollefson (illness) did not participate in practice.

DE Osi Umenyiora (knee) was a limited participant in practice, and LB Gerris Wilkinson (hand) and OT Kareem McKenzie (illness) were full participants in practice.
