Sounders’ Martins named MLS player of the week

Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins was voted Major League Soccer’s player of the week Monday after recording two goals and an assist in the 4-2 win at Portland on Sunday.

Martins swept in the first goal from close range on a cross from Brad Evans. However, his final goal completed a twisting, turning individual effort that involved moves even he couldn’t fully remember.

“I guess I had a little bit of luck,” he said. “I was nearly like slipping, falling down. But still with a little bit of luck, I was still on my feet and tried to push the ball in front of me. I ended up seeing the ball in front of me and I decided to place the ball.”

That goal is also up for MLS goal of the week. It was Martins’ 10th of the season, tying him for the team lead with Clint Dempsey, whose Sunday goal Martins assisted on.

This is Martins’ second player of the week honor over his two seasons in MLS. It also marks the third time this season that a Sounder has taken the award, following two Dempsey selections.

The Sounders return to league play at 1 p.m. Saturday, meeting the Colorado Rapids at CenturyLink Field.
