Stars open season with 5-1 rout of Surge

A crowd of 3,710 turned out for the Tacoma Stars’ season debut Friday, and the Stars rewarded it with a 5-1 romp over the Sacramento Surge at ShoWare Center in Kent.

Dan Antoniuk led the way with a hat trick, while goalkeeper Danny Waltman kept a clean sheet into the final five minutes.

“I thought it was great,” Stars owner Lane Smith said. “I thought it was a great feeling. I thought the fans were into the game. It was a good family event. Good stuff.”

The Stars (1-0) reintroduced themselves with considerable pregame bells and whistles: ceremonial first kicks, video on the overhead boards, smoke during the introductions, the Super Star Man mascot and an anthem by the Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra.

After that, it was only 42 seconds before Antoniuk pushed the Stars ahead with their first goal of the new Major Arena Soccer League season, cleaning up the high-bouncing rebound of a saved shot.

The other goals against the Surge (0-3) came from Jamar Beasley and Joey Gjertsen.

Next, the Stars head on the road for three straight games. They return home Nov. 20 against Soles de Sonora.
