Sounders still looking for players; GM and coach discuss positional needs

The Sounders reported to preseason training Saturday, but the roster will continue to change before the regular-season opens in March.

We asked new general manager Garth Lagerwey and coach Sigi Schmid about possible positional needs:

LAGERWEY: "We’re always looking at players, and we’ll continue looking at players. Sounders have had a pretty good track record of signing at least one guy out of preseason, meaning we have a couple of trialists here with us now. We’ll have a look at them. We have four or five weeks to go through this. And again, I think part of getting value is not taking the first deal in front of you. If you can identify a trialists who is a little bit cheaper and you think can fit into your scheme, that’s something we’re definitely going to explore. … I think depending on how you look at the winger position, it wouldn’t hurt us to add some speed and it wouldn’t hurt us to add some depth there. I like both Lamar and Marco Pappa – I think they’re very good players. Brad was used out there last year; I’m not sure if that’s going to be the full-time role for him this year – that will be a decision that Sigi and the coaches will certainly be a big part of. But if Brad came in and played more centrally, say, you definitely would need another player in that position to try to augment that, especially (without DeAndre Yedlin around). Tyrone (Mears) looked good today. He’s definitely a player that we added as a faster player to add some width. Tyrone hasn’t played a lot of matches recently, so we need to see how that goes over the course of preseason as well.

SCHMID: "We’re still looking for players. We haven’t stopped looking, and I’m sure Garth made reference to that. … A little bit of it is we wanted to come into camp and see how some people did and how some people fit. And that might determine what are our real aches and pains that we want to solve first. Obviously right now we haven’t added a center back, per se. What are we going to do there? Are we going to make a positional change with a player? Are we going to look for something? What’s our depth at left back? We’re going to look at that. Do we need an additional wide player? Do we need another inside midfielder? I think those are the main for areas that we’re looking at."
