Reign announces 20-player NWSL roster

ReignFCHere's the news from the club:

Seattle Reign FC announced today the club’s 20-player roster for the 2015 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season. Reign FC will open their third NWSL campaign against the Western New York Flash on Sunday, April 12 at 4 p.m. PT on the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium.

The roster includes 14 returning members from the 2014 team, four off-season acquisitions and two players acquired during the preseason. General Manager and Head Coach Laura Harvey will return for her third season at the helm.

The team will once again train and play home matches at the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium.

Stephanie Cox, who was a 2014 U.S. Women’s National Team allocated player, signed a new contract with the club in January after it was announced that she would not be allocated in 2015. The club also reached agreement with Beverly Yanez (née Goebel), who was on loan to Reign FC in 2014 from the Japanese side INAC Kobe Leonessa. Bev was a key attacker in 2014, playing in 24 matches (21 starts) and picking up five goals and four assists.

With the return of Cox, Seattle’s core defensive unit that allowed a league low of 20 goals in 2014 will remain intact with Lauren Barnes, Kendall Fletcher, and Elli Reed also returning this season.

Reign FC’s roster once again features captain and midfielder Keelin Winters, midfielder Mariah Nogueira, goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer, forward Kiersten Dallstream and forward Dani Foxhoven.

The club recently acquired defender Amber Brooks and a first round draft pick in the 2016 NWSL College Draft from the Western New York Flash in exchange for forward Sydney Leroux and defender Amanda Frisbie. Brooks previously played for the Portland Thorns before being sent to Rochester, N.Y. during the offseason. In her lone season with Portland, Brooks appeared in 20 games (19 starts) and recorded one goal and two assists.

In November, Reign FC acquired forward Merritt Mathias from FC Kansas City in exchange for defender Kate Deines and two draft picks to the 2015 NWSL College Draft. Shortly after, the club also signed defender Michelle Cruz. Cruz, who graduated from the University of Portland in 2014, most recently played with Apollon Limassol F.C. in the Cypriot First Division.

Reign FC announced last week the signing of midfielder Havana Solaun. The club acquired the University of Florida product with the No. 15 overall pick on January 16, 2015 in the NWSL College Draft. Solaun played in 90 games (71 starts) for Florida and was an All-Southeastern Conference first-team selection in 2013 and 2014.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo and forward Megan Rapinoe will join Reign FC on April 8th following their participation with the U.S. Women’s National team. The NWSL’s 2014 League MVP, Golden Boot winner and Scottish international Kim Little will join the team, along with Scottish National Team member Rachel Corsie, on April 10th following their international friendly against Australia.

Corise was signed on January 29 and adds depth to Reign FC’s experienced back-line. She spent last season with Notts County Ladies F.C. of the FA WSL, the top tier in the English women’s football league system. Corsie made 22 appearances (22 starts) across all competitions for the Lady Magpies and helped anchor a backline that only allowed eight goals in 14 league matches.

Jess Fishlock will also remain a key part of Reign FC’s lineup and will join the team on April 10th following her recent international call-up with the Wales Women’s National Team. Fishlock started in all 22 of her appearances in 2014, scored four goals, and led the league with eight assists.

Danish National Team midfielder Katrine Veje will join Reign FC on July 1 immediately after the conclusion of her current contract with Brøndby IF of Denmark’s Elitedivisionen.

Reign FC concluded preseason play with a 2-0 record, defeating the University of Portland 5-0 at Merlo Field on March 28 and the University of Washington by a score of 2-0 at Memorial Stadium on April 3.
