S2 advances in extra time; RSL awaits

Round3

Sounders 2 needed extra time for the second consecutive time, but they once again advanced in the U.S. Open Cup.

This time the result was a 2-1 over Portland Timbers 2, with the game-winner coming from Pablo Rossi in the 103rd minute.

The result sends S2 on to the fourth round, meeting Real Salt Lake of MLS in Utah on June 17. Sounders 2 also had needed extra time before advancing past Kitsap in the second round.

"I feel like I just played," coach Ezra Hendrickson said. "Oh my goodness. … (Rossi) just keeps coming up with big goal after big goal after big goal. And that’s what special players do. We’ve very happy with the entire team today. It was a great performance. This was really, really, really a team effort. … These guys just find some way to find something in the tank every time. They just find a way to come out with victories, especially here at home. And you’ve got to tip your hat off to them. Today was incredible, in this heat in this weather; third game in eight or 10 days. They dug deep. I’m very happy for them. Now we’ve got seven or eight 18-, 19-year-olds get to play against an MLS team. What a joy for them. I’m so happy for them." There was little indication early that extra time would be needed, as S2 swarmed the Portland goal area for the first 10 minutes. However, T2 seemed to find its footing after that. Still, the first half ended scorelessly despite Seattle putting seven shots on target.

Portland broke onto the scoreboard about 10 minutes into the second half, when Rennico Clark headed in a cross from Blair Gavin.

The Sounders answered in the 66th minute when Victor Mansaray rolls a ball through to T2 defense to Andy Craven, who touched the ball around the keeper and finished into an open net to equalize.

Rossi’s winner came after a Portland defensive error in the penalty area.

S2’s USL regular season continues Saturday in California against Orange County Blues FC. Their next home match is June 5 against the Tulsa Roughnecks.
