As the Sounders trained today at Qwest Field, work crews were in the lower reaches of the upper deck, removing tarp from the loge seats that will be opened -- and apparently filled -- Thursday when the Sounders meet Houston in the first game of their playoff pairing.
Even with the additional seats -- which ring the upper deck below the entrance tunnels -- the game looks like it's destined to sell out. Sounders officials said that only scattered singles remained as of around noon today.
"The buzz in the city and the excitement is just superb," coach Sigi Schmid said today. "People are walking around and you can feel it. I was standing on the corner crossing the street the other day and someone says ‘Hey coach, good luck in the playoffs.’ It’s just great to know that people are aware of what’s going on. I was walking out of church and the priest says ‘Who are we going to play? Chivas or Houston?’ I said I don’t know yet, the game’s not over. It’s great to know that people have the interest and the buzz is there. I know they took the tarps off more seats so we are going to have a few more fans in here, and I think that’s tremendous.”
