At least, he was the first candidate mentioned by coach Sigi Schmid when asked about it today.
"Obviously, there’s Jeff Parke that we’ve got signed," Schmid said. "Patrick Ianni played back there successfully for us last year as well. As our midfielders get healthy it allows us to pull him back there. I think we have options to fill that hole."
Goalkeeper Kasey Keller also made quick mention of Parke in an even longer list of candidates.
"I think we showed (depth) last year in the (U.S. Open) Cup and during suspensions and different things – and now with the addition of Jeff Parke, and Taylor Graham’s fit, Pat (Ianni) can always drop back in the center-back role and you’ve got Zack (Scott) can slide into the role and Tyson (Wahl) can step into the role," Keller said. "… If there was one position I think that we were more than capable of covering for, it’s going to be the center-back role."
As for Parke, the veteran said he hopes the get the assignment and is confident he can do the job despite practicing with his new teammates for only a week. "I haven’t been here for a while, but I’ve been around long enough to know what you’ve got to do, what you’ve got to put in to get the job done," he said. "It’s going to be difficult because I haven’t been training as much, but if he calls on me – which I hope he does – I hope that I’m more to the task than I guess I expected because I didn’t expect to jump in right away."
