The 2010 MLS All-Star First XI will be announced at 12:40 this afternoon on ESPNews.
The MLS All-Star First XI consists of the 11 MLS players that received the most votes from fans, players, coaches and general managers, and media with one-fourth of the total vote coming from each of those four groups. The MLS First XI will be joined by the coaches’ picks and Commissioner’s selections to complete the 2010 MLS All-Star roster. In the 15th annual midsummer event, the MLS All-Stars will face the 2009 English Premier League champions Manchester United in the 2010 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at Reliant Stadium, in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday, July 28 (live on ESPN2 and TeleFutura at 5:30 p.m. PT).
Unfortunately, the Sounders will be playing thier CONCACAF Champions League home match the night of the All-Star Game.
However, there's also the issue of what Sounders -- if any -- are having all-star seasons.
"I never think a lot about that because the fans vote and different people vote," coach Sigi Schmid said yesterday. "Obviously a lot of times all-star selections go hand-in-hand with is the team being successful at the moment or is the team not being successful? I imagine a lot of nominations for people from L.A. and Salt Lake and people like that. But I think there are some guys for up who have stood up and played well, but it's really in the hands of other people."
Last season, Kasey Keller and Freddie Ljungberg were voted onto the First XI, and Fredy Montero and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado were added later when the roster was filled out.
