MLS All-Star coach Bruce Arena just clarified on a conference call with league media that he did not consider any Sounders among his All-Star selections because they would be unavailable due to the conflict of the CONCACAF Champions League match that same night.
However, eight more MLS players will be added to an All-Star "inactive roster" will be named a week from today, and Sounders will be eligible for that.
"There will be, my guess, some Seattle Sounders players who will be All-Stars," Arena said. "However, it was virtually impossible for them to play or participate in this game because they have a very important Champions League game (the same night). And the Sounders believe that game is important as do the L.A. Galaxy and Toronto (who play the night before). We think the Champions League is a vital competition for our league. It’s the job of these clubs to win … and hopefully move forward into group play. We had to take all of that into consideration."
