Tacoma Tide FC begin their 2011 United Soccer Leagues PDL campaign this Friday May 13 with a 7 PM match against the North Sound SeaWolves at Stadium Bowl. In preparation for the opener the Tide announce the signing of thirteen players, pushing the Tacoma roster to twenty-two.Adam Bettencourt was a part of Tide Open Tryouts in early April. Now the 6 foot Sacramento State Hornet junior is joining Tacoma to strengthen the Yellows midfield defense. He impressed early on and Tide brass have been anxious for his arrival.
The University of Washington Huskies soccer program continues to influence the Tide roster. Casey McCool returns to the Tide defense. Joining Tacoma for the first time is defender Taylor Peay. Quinn Grisham arrives at midfield. The Tide now have seven current or former Huskies on their 2011 roster.
Chad Kearns is a striker from Pacific Lutheran University of Tacoma. Micah Wenzel is a midfielder from Tacoma who recently played for the indoor Tacoma Stars. Brandon Henry, who played with Tacoma's University of Puget Sound, returns to the Tide defense.
Spencer Schomaker has seen as much time on the pitch in Yellow as nearly anyone in Tide history. Striker Schomaker is a Seattle native who is currently the second all-time Tacoma leading scorer. Defender Sean Foss helped establish Tacoma FC back in 2006. He returned in 2010 and continues with the club this year. Midfielder Ruben Orozco is also a Tide standard bearer. The St. Martin's (Lacey WA) player first suited up in Yellow back in 2007.
Midfielder Max Thomas has played in the United States Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) with Tacoma's Washington Premier. Midfielder / Defender Devin Thomas was on the NWAACC 2010 South-West All Star team for Highline Community College. Midfielder Austin Kelley hails from Olympia and plays his college soccer at St. Martin's.
The Tide roster will breathe as the season progresses, occasionally adjusting with additions and subtractions. As is the roster currently has two goalkeepers, six defenders, ten midfielders and four forwards.
Elliot Morton was originally announced as a Tide signee on defense. He and the club await clearance from doctors for his possible return. Morton is not on the current 22-man list.
Wear Yellow, Get in for Five Bucks
Tacoma Tide FC are running an opening night promotion where adult or college-age fans who wear something yellow get in for half-price on May 13th. Tickets for fans wearing yellow are only $5. Youth also get in for $5. Kids 5 and under are admitted for free.
Wayne “Big Daddy” Farris named Tide PA Announcer
Wayne “Big Daddy” Farris will take the microphone at Tide home matches this season. Wayne is a Boeing Business Operations Specialist, a Puyallup resident, and a community personality.
A player and coach at various levels for some three decades, Wayne has a passion for the Beautiful Game. When he’s not soaking in the views from Stadium Bowl and cheering on the Tide, Wayne enjoys music, songwriting, serving his local church, and time with his wife and four kids.
Wayne hopes to press “play” often on the Tide 2011 anthem, a punk rock cover of the Beatles “Yellow Submarine.” A clip of the song will be played after every Tide goal at Stadium Bowl.
