Emergency keeper wins MLS player of week

I wondered if other voters would join me in voting for Los Angeles midfielder-turned-emergency-goalkeeper Mike Magee for MLS player of the week. And they did:

Mike Magee of the LA Galaxy was voted MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 15. Magee earned the honor not for his play at midfield – his natural position – but for his play as goalkeeper where recorded four saves in 47 minutes of play to preserve the 0-0 tie against the San Jose Earthquakes.

Magee took over goalkeeping duties after the Galaxy lost both their goalkeepers in the first half. In the 23rd minute, Donovan Ricketts left the match with an injury. His replacement, goalkeeper Josh Saunders, received a red card in the 43rd minute after he threw an elbow at Steven Lenhart. Magee stepped in and took his place between the posts.

After making just one save in his first 35 minutes, Magee was forced to make three crucial saves in the final 10 minutes as San Jose applied offensive pressure.

Magee made the save of the day in the 89th minute when he dove at Lenhart, just as the forward struck the ball from inside the six-yard box. The shot caromed off Magee and out of play.

Magee is the second LA Galaxy player to be named Player of the Week this season; Landon Donovan earned the honor in week six.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information can be found at
