Game crucial to Fire, of interest to Sounders

The Sounders return to practice at Starfire today. And they resume MLS play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the regular-season home finale vs. San Jose. However, there are a couple of league matches tonight. Here are previews from MLS:

Chicago Fire vs. FC Dallas, 5:30 p.m.· The Fire saw their three-game winning streak come to an end in their last game, a 1-1 draw at Houston on Oct. 1.· Dominic Oduro returned to his goalscoring ways, netting the lone goal in Houston, his third goal in the last four games and the seventh of his team-leading 12 since Aug. 7.· FC Dallas have been shutout in four consecutive league games, losing all of them. At 360 minutes, FCD has the longest goalless streak in MLS this season and 10 minutes away from the club record, set in 2003.· The teams opened the season against each other on March 19. Diego Chaves and Milton Rodríguez traded goals in the opening 18 minutes as the teams ended in a 1-1 draw.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. D.C. United, 7 p.m.· Whitecaps FC won for the first time in their new BC Place home on Thursday evening, a 3-0 victory against Real Salt Lake.· Camilo took over the Whitecaps FC team lead with 11 goals, scoring twice – both from the penalty spot in the 3-0 win against Real Salt Lake.· D.C. United are coming off a 2-1 loss at Columbus on Oct. 2, their second loss in a row. It’s the first time they’ve suffered back-to-back losses this season since the second and third games of the year, losses at Colorado and New England.· In the first meeting this season, Chris Pontius scored twice and Dwayne De Rosario set up two goals as United rolled to a 4-0 win, Aug. 13 at RFK Stadium.

Here's what's at stake for Chicago:

Chicago Fire will be eliminated from MLS Cup Playoffs contention if:· they lose to FC Dallas (Oct. 12) AND· Houston wins or ties vs. Portland (Oct. 14) AND· New York wins or ties vs. Kansas City (Oct. 15)OR· they tie FC Dallas (Oct. 12) AND· Houston wins vs. Portland (Oct. 14) AND· New York wins vs. Kansas City (Oct. 15) AND· Columbus wins or ties vs. New England (Oct. 15)

However, with the Sounders all but certain of playing the No. 3 finisher in the West, they also have an interest in that game, as Dallas could still catch Real Salt Lake. (Although, of course, they would actually have to score a goal at some point.)
