Schmid: MLS season longer than some think

USA national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has offered suggestions on how MLS could develop players better, including a call for a longer league season.

US Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati agrees.

MLS commissioner seemed to agree that more games would be fine, but maybe not so much if it means soccer in Chicago in December or February. “Jurgen’s right. The season’s too short,” Garber he was quoted as saying this week. “I’d love to be able to have global warming take its effect and have the weather in our country change and be able to have a longer season. But I think our fan base is developing. The time will come we’ll be able to spread our season out a little bit. I appreciate Jurgen’s support.”

Here's what Sounders coach Sigi Schmid had to say about that when asked today:

Obviously we play a ton of games. I think sometimes the reflection of the length of the season, when you say as an example the German season runs from August until the end of May or something. Yes, but they also have a six-week break there in the middle of it. So when you all of a sudden now go go end of May, well, that means June and July is two months and you put that month break there in January, and all of a sudden you get three months off – which is really comparable to what we have. I think what happens that makes our season seem too short is that the break comes in one segment, and so for a lot of the guys its really hard because anyplace else you play in the world you’re going to have a break in the middle of the season at some point, and our guys go straight through. England doesn’t do it, but they start a little later, or end earlier for sure. But you look at all the South American leagues, there’s a first half of the season, a second season, a Clausura champion, an Apertura champion, and there’s always that break in between.

Our guys have gone February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October and then go into November. That’s very close to 10 months – or it is going to be 10 months at the end of the day – so it’s very comparable. Maybe a shifting of the season: getting a break into the middle of it. Weather-wise there are certain things that you have to deal with. For sure the season is longer than it has been. If I remember right we started before the Mariners, and we’re still playing, and they’re done. So it’s been a long season.
