Galaxy makes it a double: Wins MLS Cup, 1-0

Final: Los Angeles, 1-0, over Houston. (Details here.) The Galaxy adds an MLS Cup to go with its Supporters Shield, and clearly was the MLS team of 2011. In fact, a good case can be made that this was the best team in MLS history. And they won their Cup before a record Home Depot Center crowd of 30,281.

The final game was not a dazzler. But it was a terrific season for MLS, which added successful expansion teams in Vancouver and Portland, set its all-time attendance record, and seemed to put an improved product on the pitch.

Sounders FC is clearly the best off-field franchise in the league. But their LA rivals have given them a clear on-field goal to aim for.72nd minute: Landon Donovan puts LA ahead, 1-0.

Halftime: First half was all Galaxy, with several very good scoring chances. But it remains nil-nil.

Pregame: A reminder that the MLS season comes to a close tonight as Houston and Los Angeles meet in the MLS Cup final. First kick is 6 p.m., and the game will be shown live on ESPN.

Here's an overview from MLSsoccer.com.

Here is some preview coverage from the Los Angeles Times.

And from the Houston Chronicle.

Reaction: I have a ton of respect for Houston, and I think the Dynamo will become of the league's great franchises when they move into their new stadium next season. However, it's time for MLS Cup to go into the trophy case of the best team in the league. And in 2011, that means the Galaxy.
