After Saturday scrimmage, Sounders will get time off to watch Super Bowl

Here's the latest training report from the club:

Seattle Sounders FC held another full field 11 v 11 scrimmage on Saturday morning. The desert sun beamed down on the Rave Green as it was the hottest morning yet since the team arrived.

There were two teams of 11 players with a third group undergoing an intense fitness session on an adjacent field. The scrimmage consisted of two 20-minute halves and ended 1-nil, despite several scoring opportunities. The lone goal came in the second half as Wes Feighner controlled a long ball and sped down the right flank. Feighner served a cross into the box where SuperDraft pick Babayele Sodade finished the scoring play.

Among the other scoring opportunities were a long-range shot from trialist Andrew Vanzie and a strong header from David Estrada, both forcing diving saves. Sammy Ochoa collected a pass from Cordell Cato and struck a low shot from the top of the box that was saved by Bryan Meredith. Supplemental Draft pick Jason Banton was also dangerous throughout the scrimmage as he consistently attacked the box and created several scoring chances. Perhaps the best highlight came in the final minute as Steve Zakuani, who played the full 40 minutes, flew down the left side with blazing speed. Zakuani then did a series of step-overs and cut to the middle before striking the ball at goal. His shot sailed just over the crossbar as time ran out.

The third group did several series of timed sprints with fitness coach Dave Tenney with a clear focus on preparing the group to be game fit. The team held a weight session indoors in the afternoon and will bus to Phoenix on Saturday night for a team dinner at the Evans’ household.

Sounders FC will take Super Bowl Sunday off and return to training on Monday morning. The first training game of the preseason is Monday afternoon against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT at Grande Sports World in Casa Grande, Ariz. and is open to the public at no charge. There will be a live blog of the training game onwww.SoundersFC.com.

Quotes from Head Coach Sigi Schmid

(On Saturday’s training session…) “It was another chance to look at some of the players who are competing for spots on the team and also to get some good fitness work in for the first team guys. It was a really productive day and it’s been a really good week of fitness.”

(On Steve Zakuani…) “The plan we had was for him to play 20 minutes and after 20 he asked if he could keep playing. I think he ran out of gas at about the 30 minute mark, so the last 10 he sort of stood up front and was a forward who really didn’t chase back much. He had the opportunity at the end and we saw the old Zakuani step-over and push it inside and he just hit it over the top. With each day he gets a little more confidence. There’s still no timeline, but every day it gets a little better.”
