Kansas City wins the 99th U.S. Open Cup on penalty kicks.
Seattle had led on PKs, 2-1, but the final three kickers -- Alonso, Tiffert and Johnson -- all missed.
It is KC's second Open Cup title -- the first was in 2004.
It ends Seattle's run of three straight titles.
Back with more soon.
Second 15: Also scoreless. We're going to penalty kicks.
First extra 15: ... have passed scorelessly. Another 15 ahead. If still even, this Cup is going to penalty kicks.
Extra time: ... has begun. Two 15-minute halves. No golden goal.
84th and 86th minutes: Kei Kamara puts SKC ahead on penalty kick after handball in box by Zach Scott; and Seattle answers with header by Zack Scott. Even 1-1.
80th minute: Scoreless. Tension building. There's a game-winning hero down there somewhere.
Attendance: 18,863, which they're calling standing room only.
72nd minute: Yellow to Ianni.
68th minute. Evans and Tiffert in for Caskey and Rose. Still scoreless. Sounders get a lot more veteran for the home stretch of a cup final.
Through 60: Still scoreless. Rosales and Alonso now playing with yellow cards.
Second half: ... has just begun.
Halftime: Scoreless, but certainly not actionless.
Shots (on goal): SKC 5 (1), SEA 5 (1) ... Fouls: SKC 7-8 SEA ... Possession: SKC 44-56 SEA.
Eddie Johnson and Kei Kamara especially dangerous for their respective teams.
Through 40: Still scoreless. Another another great Eddie Johnson chance, and momentum turning a bit to Seattle.
36th minute: Brilliant run by Eddie Johnson, losing Olum and into space in the box. But shot wide.
30 minutes in: Scoreless. Kamara shot hit the crossbar, and Eddie Johnson header on frame was nicely saved.
20 minute: Scoreless. Physical. Better chances to SKC.
First 10 minutes: More play on SKC's attacking side. One Gspurning save.
Fourth minute: Yellow to Osvaldo Alonso ... for dissent after knocking down Kei Kamara.
First kick: The 99th U.S. Open Cup final has begun. Sounders in shale/shale, SKC in light blue/blue.
Michael Gspurning gives raised-hands clap to Sounders supporters, who are on his side of pitch in first half.
Teams return: The worst of the weather seems to have passed, and the clubs have been allowed back onto the pitch to resume pregame warmups.
We are told to expect first kick at 6:41 Pacific time.
Lineups: For Sounders G Gspurning; D Gonzalez, Ianni, Hurtado, Scott; M Caskey, Rose, Alonso, Rosales; F Johnson, Montero. Reserves: Weber, Parke, Nurch, Tiffert, Evans, Zakuani, Ochoa.
For SKC: GK Nielsen; D Sinovic, Besler, Olum, Myers; D Espinoza, Cesar, Nagamura; F Kamara, Bunbury, Zusi. Reserves: Kronberg, Markovic, Harrington, Thomas, Sapong, Saad, Peterson.
45 minutes to first kick: Rain, hail, lightning and thunder are rolling through the area. Pregame preparations have been stopped. Fans have been asked to "walk, don't run" from the seating areas.
Two hours to first kick: Plenty of tailgaters already in the parking lot around Livestrong Sporting Park, site of tonight's U.S. Open Cup final between Sounders FC and Sporting KC. It is hot and (99 as I type this), and cool is not in the forecast. However, clouds also are rolling in, and the forecast indicates about a 50-50 chance of thundershowers.
