The Sounders are off the training pitch for another day. And with the conclusion of work today at Starfire came a little celebration and then a little break.
The celebration was an Oktoberfest-themed post-practice gathering, perhaps influenced by players such as Michael Gspurning and Christian Tiffert, and coaches such as Sigi Schmid and Brian Schmetzer.
That is followed by an off-day tomorrow before the club returns to work Sunday.
Here's some of what Schmid had to say about today's practice:
"I thought it was good. Two good goals from the one group. The other group scored a good goal as well. Individuals stood up and played. We wanted to have a good week. We emphasized on spacing all week, and so we just talked about that a little at the end: situations in that scrimmage where I thought we lost that a little bit; and talking about just making sure that we support each other at all times, because that’s what’s important ass we move forward into the playoffs."
On Gspurning, who has taken it easy in practice this week: He’s fine. We just wanted to keep him away from kicking this week and wanted to go easier with him this week because he’s played all the games. We have enough goalkeepers, so we wanted for him to have it a little bit easier and the others could get the work this week. He’ll be back in regular routines, and regular rhythms next week. … He took a little bit of a knock from that one-on-one challenge with (Darren) Mattocks in Vancouver, but obviously he played the following week against Portland: It wasn’t an issue. So we’re just trying to make sure at this point of the season that nothing small becomes something big.
