Finally, it was a day of somersaults and backflips for Seattle Sounders FC.
In the sixth game of their Major League Soccer season, the Sounders broke into the win column with a 1-0 victory against the Colorado Rapids today in Commerce City, Colo.
Seattle’s lone goal came from new designated player Obafemi Martins in the 27th minute.
Martins celebrated in his usual fashion: with a somersault and backflip.

However, the full team celebration had to wait as the Sounders weaved their way through several close calls over the final hair-raising 62 minutes before becoming the final MLS team to remove the zero from its win total.
“I hope to score many goals, and I hope for the Sounders to win many games,” Martins told KONG-TV after the match.
While Martins got the decisive final touch, more than half of the Sounders on the pitch had a role in the score.
The play began with Brad Evans taking possession near the middle of the field and sent a short pass to Osvaldo Alonso, who returned it to Evans. He then sent a pass to DeAndre Yedlin on the right touchline. Yedlin made a run to the top of the penalty area, where he side-footed the ball on to Lamar Neagle. Neagle crossed the ball to Steve Zakuani in the box. Zakuani laid the ball back to Shalrie Joseph, who fired a screamer on goal.
Colorado goalkeeper Clinton Irwin batted it away, but Martins got the ball, bought some space with a little fake on his defender, and calmly steered the ball inside the far post from about 8 yards.
The result moves the Sounders to 1-3-2 on the season, still last in the Western Conference, but now just three points behind Colorado, which fell to 2-4-2.
Seattle returns to league play May 4 at Philadelphia.
I'll be back with notes and quotes.89' Burch in for Neagle, who had a really active, threatening game.
70' Caskey in for Zakuani, who gets handshake from Mullan as he goes off.
61: Martins out, Rosales in.
60' Sounders dodge double threats: one off crossbar and Gspurning works his way back for rebound.
Second half: ... has begun. One change by Colorado: Hill in for LaBrocca
Schmid tells KONG that he expects about 15 more minutes from Obafemi Martins.
Halftime: Sounders 1-0. And almost 2, as Evans was just wide with header in stoppage time.
Shots 8-6 SEA; on goal 2-0 SEA; corners 4-2 COL; fouls 5-4 COL; offside 1-0 SEA; yellows 1-0 COLO; possession 51% COL.
29th minute: Neagle almost adds to the advantage, but shot clangs off the crossbar.
27th minute: GOAL Sounders. Obafemi Martins gets first Sounders goal, clearning up rebound from about 8 yards. Follows with his somersault goal celebration. Play began with Yedlin at midfield, strong run, sends bacll forward to Neagle, who crosses to Zakuani in box. He drops it back to Joseph, who scorches one from the arc. That was saved nicely, but Oba swooped in to send it back.
First 15 minutes: Scoreless, and general run of play has become pretty equal as well. Sounders have had some nice runs of possession, but no real chances.
First five minutes: Rapids come out the more aggressive team, which has to change.
Lots of empty seats at DSG Park.
First kick: The game has begun, with Edson Buddle a late scratch for Rapids.
Sounders in rave/rave; Rapids in burgundy/white.
So -- Martins and Evans return, but Johnson and Ianni do not. And Steve Zakuani in the starting lineup, back where his career-changing injury was inflicted.
For Colorado: Irwin; Klute, Moor, Wynne, Mullan; Cascio, Powers, Thomas, Labrocca; Harris, Mwanga. Reserves: Ceus, Wallace, Smith, Sturgess, O’Neill, Serna, Hill.
Pregame: That sign greets the visiting team as it leaves its locker room and heads to the soccer pitch at Dick's Sports Goods Park, home of the Colorado Rapids.
I took that picture when the Sounders visited last season. Unfortunately, I didn't travel today, but I'll keep this blog post open all day for pregame, in game and postgame news, starting with the linesup and continuing through provided quotes after the game. I'll also be tweeting updates @donruiztnt. Locally, the game will be shown on KONG 6/16, and will be heard at the usual radio outlets.I'll be back soon with lineups.
