Schmid lists players to watch at reserve match; one could be Estrada, just cleared to play

The Sounders play at Reserve League match against San Jose at 8 tonight at Starfire.

A couple of hours before kickoff, we asked first-team coach Sigi Schmid what the club hopes to get out of the match.

"With the reserves, always you want guys to do well and play and put themselves in the forefront," he said. "Years ago it was Lamar Neagle who scored goals in the reserve games and pushed himself to the first team. Last year it was guys like Caskey and Rose who through their performance on the reserve team pushed their way onto the first team. Eriq Zavaleta scored last week, so there’s another chance for him to see if he can get on the scoreboard and push himself a little closer to the first team as well. It’s important for Patrick Ianni, he’s got to get some minutes as well, get his rhythm again of playing. It’s important for him. Obviously if DeAndre (Yedlin) does make it to the under-20 World Cup we might be missing him for a few games, so it’s a chance for us look at Zach Scott as an outside back. There’s a lot of things we can accomplish in the game tonight.

"Estrada just got cleared today to be able to play. I don’t know how many minutes we’re going to play him tonight. We’re not going to start him, but I don’t know how many minutes we’re going to play him because we weren’t sure he was cleared or not cleared. And with Patrick (Ianni) we just have to see."
