Now the Sounders get a rare weekend off before returning to training Monday to begin preparations for their MLS match next weekend at Philadelphia.
"Just wanted to play a little bit, give some guys a chance to play," coach Sigi Schmid said. "So it was good to continue to build fitness on some guys like Ianni -- because he’s really in preseason mode. We didn’t want to play the full length of a regular game, we kept some guys out obviously and we just wanted to keep the other guys in a rhythm and then give them two days off.
A couple of news items:
Schmid said No. 1 draft pick Eriq Zavaleta -- who has bounced between forward and central defender -- will play out this season as a forward. Schmid still believes Zavaleta's ultimate upside might be in the back, but he wants to provide some stability as Zavaleta plays through his rookie season.

Schmid also had praise for No. 3 keeper Josh Ford, who was in goal for the U-23s today. (Ford saved a penalty kick taken by Brad Evans today.) Schmid also said the club would be open to loaning Ford out to some other club if the situation was right to get Ford some work.
