Sounders coach Sigi Schmid was asked today about the decision to send Bates out.
"Just to get him a game," he said. "Whenever we can we’re going to try to send guys out to get a game here and there when we don’t feel they’re going to get a game here with us. We have a lot of forwards, so it was a good opportunity for us to get a game."
Though just one game, Bates said the game -- in which he took one shot -- was useful to him.
"It was a good opportunity for me to get 90 minutes in," he said. "It was really, I think, the main purpose of me going out there. It was my first game in four months, five months, where I really got to play the whole time. So it was good. ... The thing that came away from it was a little more confidence in my fitness level. They had been working with me here, really pushing me to the max and giving me extra work with (fitness coach) Dave Tenney and them. So I felt pretty good. It was reassuring to get the 90 minutes and to feel good."
