The Sounders U-23 return to the Pacific Northwest Friday night for their PDL season home opener at Curtis High School in University Place, WA. There they will take on Narrows Bridge rivals, Kitsap Pumas, at 7:00 p.m. in a crucial early season match-up between division contenders.
Both teams have been slow to get out of the gate so far in this young 2013 PDL season. Kitsap is 1-2-0, earning their only three points with a 1-0 victory over the Washington Crossfire, and are currently in fourth place in the seven-team Northwest division. The Pumas are in the middle of an opening five-match road trip to start the season. Their two losses came north of the border to the Victoria Highlanders FC, and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-23. The Sounders U-23 got off to a hot start in the U.S. Open Cup, disposing of Doxa Italia 5-1 in the first round match, but have since cooled off. In their first two PDL games, the Sounders U-23 are a frustrating 0-2-0, with road losses at the Portland Timbers U-23 and Victoria Highlanders FC. Most recently the Sounders U-23 are coming home from a hard fought second round U.S. Open Cup match up against USL PRO team, Charlotte Eagles. The Sounders U-23 held the professional side without a goal for nearly an hour until the Eagles broke loose on their way to the 3-0 victory over the youngsters.
Last season, the Sounders U-23 and Pumas faced one another three times with the Pumas coming out on top 2-1-0, outscoring the Sounders 7-3. However, the Sounders U-23 went on to win the division with 36 points, while Kitsap had to settle for third with 32.
