U-23 alum from Tacoma signs with Rowdies

Here's the news from Sounders U-23:

Sounders FC U-23 alum, Jamael Cox, signed a professional contract today to play for the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Cox signed a two year contract with North American Soccer League team in U.S. Soccer's second tier. Cox, a member of the 2012 Western Conference Champion Sounders FC U-23 side, becomes the fourth player to sign a pro contract from the franchise.

Jamael Cox joins DeAndre Yedlin (Sounders FC, MLS), Anthony Arena (Houston Dynamo, MLS) and Doug Herrick (MLS) as players from the Sounders U-23 who have been acquired by professional clubs.

Head Coach and GM of the Sounders U-23, Darren Sawatzky said, “Congratulations to Jamael, we are excited for him as he takes the next step in high level soccer. The PDL served as a great venue for Jamael to develop and get the necessary games to prepare for the jump.”

Cox was an instrumental member of the Sounders FC U-23 team, scoring important game winning goals against rivals, Portland Timbers FC U-23 and scoring in the Western Conference Championship game against Ventura County Fusion.

Cox is also a product of Seattle Sounders FC Academy. He joins his brother, Raphael on the Tampa Bay Rowdies roster.

Next up for the Sounders U-23 is a mid-week matchup against the North Sound SeaWolves FC. The match is set for Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Sunset Stadium.
