In the final regular season match of the season, with the league standings already decided, the Sounders U-23 and Timbers U-23 battled for rivalry pride Tuesday night, sharing a hard fought 1-1 draw. Two goals in the first half and 33 fouls highlighted a physical battle between the Cascadian rivals. The Sounders opened up the scoring in the 22nd minute with a team goal finished off by Esteban Reyes. Mauricio DeLeon picked up possession in midfield and released the ball onto the right side for Stephen Mohn. The defender-turned-forward took a couple touches and then delicately laid a pass off for Reyes at the center of the penalty box. Reyes took one touch to turn it to the bottom left corner and off the upright for the goal.

The Timbers responded just five minutes later. After picking up a free kick at the top of the area, just a few steps to the left, Reinaldo Brenes curled a shot into the top corner to level the score. Brenes got his shot over the wall and into the corner, beating Earl Edwards’ stretched save attempt.

The first half ended with the teams tied at 1-1.

The 2nd half was choppy affair, with 28 fouls recorded in the first hour of the match.

The best chances of the 2nd half didn’t come until the final five minutes. The Timbers picked up a ball on the Sounders side of the field, where Alex Walters released a pass for Clark Phillips. The Portland attacker tried to beat Chase Hanson and curl in a shot, but the Sounders defender held on tight and blocked the attempt.

Immediately on the other end, in the 87th minute, the Sounders got the ball into the box, where Eli Gordley deflected a clearance right in front of goal. Glen Paden ran onto it near the penalty spot, with time for only one touch, but his shot was scuffed for an easy save.

In extra time, the Sounders had one final opportunity. With players pushed forward, center back Josh Phillips was played in on the left channel. Phillips crossed the ball on the ground for oncoming teammates but it was cleared before they could get a touch. The clearances was nearly put into the Timbers net for an own goal.

In the end, neither team could break the deadlock, and the match ended with a result reflecting the run of play.

The Sounders U-23 finish the 2013 Premier Development League season with a record of four wins, five losses, and five ties. They finish fourth in the Northwest Division, and qualify for a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup position as the 2nd highest American finisher in their division.
