The Sounders have announced that new designated player Clint Dempsey will miss training today due to illness.
At his introductory press conference yesterday, Dempsey had apologized for his weak crackly voice, but there had been no indication he wouldn't hit the field with his new teammates for the first time today.
His absence disappointed a couple of dozen fans or so who turned out to watch Dempsey's first work in rave green.
"Our fans are our fans and fans of the club," coach Sigi Schmid said afterward. "And I know they wanted to see Clint today, but they still saw a pretty energetic practice, pretty competition group. There’s still some starpower out here to watch."

There was no immediate decision if Dempsey's missed practice session or the illness itself will affect his availability for the game at Toronto on Saturday. However, there are limited training sessions remaining before then. The club is scheduled to practice at Starfire on Wednesday, but Thursday is a travel day, and all that's left after that is the usually very-light game-day-eve session in Toronto.
There's more information from Schmid in a post above.
