Schmid says Arizona missions accomplished

The Sounders are back in town for about of week of training -- after their time in Arizona, but ahead of their run in the Carolina Challenge Cup.

Coach Sigi Schmid was asked if the club accomplished what it wanted in the desert.

"It was good," he said. "I think we were able to get the fitness work in that we wanted to get in. We were able to make some decisions on some players that we’ve made. We were able to see how some other players fit in. We started to work on the team shape and it’s cohesion: Now we can really concentrate on that part of it. Now Evans is back and DeAndre is back as well, so we can put those final pieces in there. I thought Arizona was good. The games were good. I thought defensively in each game the unit that played the first half – or the opening minutes of those games – did fairly well, didn’t give up many goals."

And for the week ahead?

"We just want to work on our team right now: Our understanding, our shape, our movement of the ball," Schmid said. "We want to work on those things and be sure that we get the ball moving a little bit quicker, that we know where our options are going to be when we have the ball. That’s one of the main things that we want to work, as well as to continue to build fitness, especially through this week. And then when we go into Charleston, it’s going to be more of a game phase. So when you look at our training right now: the first week a shorter week; second week we really pushed them fitness-wise; the third week was more games, so a little bit of a drop off, but the got the games in; now we want to push them a little bit fitness-wise and then we drop off again."
