David Geno raises his finger to the air after scoring four goals in one half during a U.S. Open Cup match (SoundersPhotos.com)Tacoma, Wash.
Geno joined the Sounders U-23 for the 2013 season. Their first match of the year came in the opening round of the US Open Cup at home against Doxa Italia. Geno wasted little time getting on top of the 2013 score sheet, producing an impressive four goals in the first half of the match, and earned himself U.S. Open Cup Player of the Round honors.
“Playing with the [Sounders] U-23s helped me tremendously in my soccer career,” David Geno said. “Coach Darren Sawatzky took a chance on me and gave me an opportunity to play for him and he helped me from the first practice I got there. The U-23s gave me a whole new experience of playing in a great environment. It couldn't have been better.”
Unfortunately for Geno and the Sounders U-23, his 2013 summer campaign was cut short by an ankle injury suffered on the road at the Victoria Highlanders.
The injury did not, however, slow Geno down on his way to a highly decorated collegiate career at ETSU. Over his four-year career at ETSU, Geno was named to the All-Atlantic Sun First Team three times, the NSCAA All-South Region First Team in 2012, and Soccer America’s Preseason All-America Team in 2013. He also became the first ever ETSU player to be named Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, achieving the feat in 2012 following a historic junior campaign in which he set ETSU single-season records for points (30), goals (12), and assists (8).
Though his time with the Sounders U-23 was brief, Geno feels the experience has helped prepare him for a career as a professional soccer player.
“Playing for the U-23s gave me the opportunity to gain some exposure on the west coast and play for a team that was in a ‘professional style’ environment,” Geno said. “I think the combination of playing for my college team at ETSU and for the U-23s prepared me well for the next step.”
