The Sounders trained at CenturyLink Field today, two days before they open their MLS season there against Sporting Kansas City.
There was a new rave-green tarp spread across the upper deck, but there was the same FieldTurf on the pitch. The turf is heading into its third year, and the last time the club kept the same turf that long there was notable fall-off in the way it affected the game.
Coach Sigi Schmid was asked how this turf is doing.
"It’s not as good as it was last year," he said. "It’s not as good as it was in its first year. That’s just a natural thing. It’s something that once the blades lay down, they don’t want to stand up anymore. I think our grounds crew here does a great job and I know they’re going to do a fantastic job trying to lift them and get them back up and so forth and make it a more playable surface as regards to soccer is concerned. So they’re going to do all that they can, and that’s all we can ask of them right now."
