Sounders kick RSL into loss column, 4-0

SoundersRSLSeattle Sounders FC handed RSL its first loss of the season today -- and with an exclamation point: 4-0.

Sounders goals came from Gonzalo Pineda, Marco Pappa, Chad Barrett and Obafemi Martins.

The Sounders remain atop MLS at 9-3-2. RSL falls to 6-1-6.

"Obviously we’re happy with the result," coach Sigi Schmid said. "Pleased because we know that offensively they’re a good team. Pleased that we could come away today with a shutout – it’s one of the things that we’ve been working on is that defensively we take care of things a little bit better. Once we were 3-0 up they had a few chances at that point, but we also had some chances to score some more. But I was pleased with our team’s effort, pleased with out commitment to the game, pleased with the way we came out in the first 15 minutes of each half, which was one of the goals that we set for ourselves today, was to come out well at the beginning of each half."

I'll be back with more notes and quotes.

Until then, here are some postgame notes from the club:

-Sounders FC extends its lead in the Supporter’s Shield standings and is now five points ahead of Real Salt Lake. This week will mark the seventh consecutive week Seattle has sat atop the standings, dating back to April 26.

-The win snapped Real Salt Lake’s 12-match unbeaten streak (6-0-6), tied for the longest to start a season in MLS history.

-The Rave Green won its fifth consecutive match at CenturyLink Field—the longest home winning streak in MLS this season. The club’s six home wins also lead MLS.

-The four-goal margin of victory is the largest of the season for Sounders FC.

-Gonzalo Pineda scored on a penalty kick for the second consecutive game, giving him two goals and four assists on the season. He is just the second player in club history to convert multiple penalty kicks in a season after Brad Evans (2011, 2012, 2013).

-Marco Pappa’s goal marked his first for Sounders FC and first in MLS since August 4, 2012 while with the Chicago Fire.

-Chad Barrett scored for the second consecutive game, giving him three on the season. The nine-year MLS veteran is now 14th among active players with 47 career goals.

-Obafemi Martin’ late goal is his sixth of the season, second on the team and tied-sixth in MLS.

-Lamar Neagle matched a career high by recording his fourth assist of the season, tied for second on the team.

-Kenny Cooper recorded an assist for the second consecutive match, giving him three on the season.

-The game marked the 18th meeting across all competitions between Salt Lake and Seattle (13th in MLS), tied for the most among Sounders FC opponents (LA Galaxy). Sounders FC now leads the series 7-6-5.

62' GOAL Seattle. Up to 3-0 now. Barrett -- who had been dangerous all day -- set it up. Assist to Neagle.

55' GOAL Seattle. Marco Pappa on free kick from 23 yards while Chad Barrett disrupts RSL wall. Sounders, 2-0.

Attendance: 39,245.

Second half: ... is under way. No changes on either side.

Halftime: Sounders 1-0.

42' GOAL Sounders. Pineda hits second PKs in as many weeks, and Seattle up on RSL, 1-0. Lamar Neagle drew the foul with very nice persistence and hustle.

First 30 minutes: Very little offense from RSL, which is still looking for its first shot. Sounders have only one shot -- Barrett -- but have had the better opportunities.

First 15 minutes: Pretty aimlessly sluggish start. Best chance a break into the area by Chad Barrett, who rolled shot just wide.

First kick: ... has been struck. We're under way. Sounders in rave/blue; RSL in red/red.

Lineups: For the Sounders: GK Frei; D Evans, Scott, Marshall, Gonzalez; M Neagle, Alonso, Pineda, Pappa; F Barrett, F Martins. Reserves: Hahnemann, Anibaba, Azira, Cooper, Remick, Rose, Weaver.

For RSL: GK Attinella; D Beltran, Maund, Borchers, Wingert; M Grossman, Mulholland, Grabavoy, Morales; F Sandoval, Garcia. Reserves: Fernandez; Mansally, Balchan, Salcedo, Stertzer, Gil, Findley.
