Schmid estimates 9 of top 18 Sounders were out Saturday; updates progress for Timbers

Sounders coach Sigi Schmid gave these roster updates heading into this two-game week: Wednesday in U.S. Open Cup vs. Portland, and Sunday in MLS again vs. Portland:

On DeAndre Yedlin for Wednesday: He’ll be available. In what capacity yet I don’t know.

On Clint Dempsey's return: Clint will be here later this week.

On Obafemi Martins' hamstring: Oba got through what we wanted him to do today fine. So we’ll continue to progress it.

On if Martins could have played a must-win game Saturday: That’s pretty much a fair assessment. We want to make sure that it doesn’t turn into something long-term because of where we are in this season. So at this stage we want to be cautious with him, and careful. And the turf here is not the best thing to play on if you’ve got a little bit of a muscle injury.

On plannign two lineups for two games: We’re going to see. A lot of it is predicated on health. We felt going into the game against Vancouver that when you looked at the whole squad and guys were missing – Traore and Remick and those guys – probably nine out of our top 18 were missing. So it depends on how many of those guys are back and healthy and that will determine how much squad rotation we can do.

On other health progress: They’re making their way back. Djimi played a good 60 minutes yesterday against Edmonton, so that was good for him. And Remick is cleared for full training (Tuesday) and that’s the first time he’s been cleared into full training. So we’re making advancements.
