us-open-cup13-2The Sounders and Timbers will meet twice over the next five days, starting tonight in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals at Starfire. Here's our preview story for the Wednesday News Tribune, and below some notes about the match:

Both games were played in Portland, and the Sounders advanced each time. The teams played to a 4-4 draw at Portland in their only MLS meeting this season. Seattle leads the all-time series across all leagues and competitions, 42-31-12. NOTES: This is a quarterfinal match in the 101st U.S. Open Cup, the championship of club soccer from all levels of the U.S. Soccer Federation. … Portland advanced with wins over Orlando City U-23 and Sporting Kansas City. Seattle defeated amateur side PSA Elite and advanced past San Jose on penalty kicks. … There must be a winner. If the match is tied after 90 minutes, there will be 30 minutes of extra time. If the score remains even, the winner will be determined on PKs. … The Sounders have advanced in all 14 Open Cup matches they have played at Starfire. … This result will not figure in the Cascadia Cup standings. … The match is sold out.QUOTABLE: “When you play at Starfire, it’s such a small field, it’s an intense and a fast game – probably a little faster than when you play at CenturyLink or even when you play down in Portland – just because the field’s so small and bouncy.
