Clint Dempsey returned to Sounders training today after a couple of days off at the ESPY's. He spoke a bit about that and also his impressions from his 2012-13 season at Tottenham, Seattle's friendly opponent tomorrow.
On his return: It’s good to be back. It’s good to be a part of the team in terms of getting back to winning ways. And excited for the rest of the season.
On the ESPYs: It was cool. It was an opportunity to go down there and hang out with some of the other athletes. It was fun for the team to win an award for moment of the year, and we all had a good time.
Other ESPY athletes impressed with USA team: It was cool. There is mutual respect for each other’s profession. It was fun to be a part of something like that and also to be recognized for getting an award. It was fun.
On Tottenham visit: It’s a chance to play against a team that I played with before, that I have good memories with. I enjoyed my time there and the season that we had. But it’s just a friendly game. They’re in preseason form; it’s just part of their preparation. At the same time, it’s just a friendly game for us. The most important thing for us is how we do in the season. I think it’s just a way to keep a little bit more fitness and just keeping us sharp for the next game of the season.
On Tottenham's place in the EPL landscape: It’s a big team that plays in the Premier League. Always manages to finish in the top five or six. They have a great history, a lot of great players who have played for them, including Jurgen Klinsmann. And it’s a team that I enjoyed my time there. The season that I was there I think we were able to get to 72 points -- it was one of the highest points totals in a season – but came up short in terms of trying to qualify for Champions League. I had a good time there, good memories, and it’s a team that has a lot of quality in it.
