Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 19 of the 2014 MLS season.
Feilhaber scored two goals and had one assist while helping Sporting KC to a pair of 2-1 victories in Week 19. In a mid-week fixture against the Columbus Crew, Sporting Kansas City forward C.J. Sapong opened the scoring for the defending champs in the 42nd minute. Feilhaber sent in a perfectly placed corner kick that found Sapong between two defenders and he was able to calmly head it into the bottom right corner.
Feilhaber scored the game-winner in the last minute of stoppage time. Defender Igor Juliao sent in a cross from the right side of the box that deflected off fellow midfielder Jacob Peterson and Feilhaber pounced on the loose ball and sent a right-footed shot in off the crossbar to seal the win.
In Sporting’s second win of the week, Feilhaber opened the scoring against the LA Galaxy in the 11th minute. Feilhaber ripped a right-footed free kick from just outside the box past LA Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo into the top left corner.
Sporting Kansas City hits road this week as they head to BMO Field to take on Toronto FC on Saturday, July 26 at 7 p.m. ET (TSN2, RDS2).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
