A wide range of subjects came up today after Sounders training, including CONCACAF Champions League, the trade of former Sounder Mauro Rosales to Vancouer, and the 49ers replacing the turf at Levi's Stadium, where the Sounders played the inaugural game Aug. 2.
COACH SIGI SCHMID on GM Adrian Hanauer stressing the club wants to return to the CCL and win it: "The team misses that competition. You complain about the travel and everything else, but certainly the players like to play in the competition because they know what it ultimately leads to. But we know what the ways are to get into that competition. We’re still in the hunt for all three of those chances. We hopefully have to make all three of those chances reality; if not, one of those three."
Schmid on Portland -- their opponent Sunday -- having traveled to Guyana at midweek for their CCL opener, a 4-1 win over Alpha United: They’ve had travel. It was certainly an extensive travel trip, but it was not a tough opponent. In Champions League you know when you’re looking at opponents, and I know we’ve gone back, we’ve played some of the Caribbean teams as well -- and no lack of respect to them, because there are teams that have qualified -- but certainly playing the teams from Central America or Mexico are tougher. And so yeah, the travel was further, but they were able to go down there with basically their reserve team and still get a result. It wasn’t a strenuous game.
SCHMID on the Levi's Stadium turf: "There were a couple of places where it didn’t look like it had fully grown in, but I’m a bit surprised that they ripped out the whole field. Maybe it’s because they lost their first game."
Defender DeANDRE YEDLIN on the turf: I thought it was fine. I thought it was a good pitch. I didn’t really see anything wrong with it.
SCHMID on Rosales to Vancouver: That’s a Carl Robinson question: I think he can answer that better than me. They wanted him so they added him to the team. I’m sure that veteran player; they’ve got a lot of speed up front, so they’re hoping for when Morales isn’t available maybe Mauro can step in and slip those guys in. But I don’t know the inner workings.
