Seattle wins 3-2 on Rose's stoppage time goal

Andy Rose scored in stoppage time to get Seattle Sounders FC a wild 3-2 win over Real Salt Lake on Friday at CenturyLink Field.

Both teams held and lost leads along the way, and RSL played the final 21 minutes shorthanded after a straight red card to defender Ned Borchers.

However, Seattle couldn’t get that advantage to show on the scoreboard until Rose got to a loose ball in the penalty area and fired it back past RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

“It shows our character and the team’s belief that 1-nothing is nothing and we can come back from that,” coach Sigi Schmid said. “The stats in this league are overwhelming that once you go down, you generally lose the game. So fighting that stat, I think, and doing the opposite is always a good thing.”

The result keeps Seattle (17-7-3) atop Major League Soccer, four points ahead of second-place Los Angeles in the same number of games, and eight points ahead of Salt Lake (12-6-10) with one game in hand.

“It was tremendous to get the three points,” Schmid said. “A big win for us in terms of separation and staying in first place and continuing to push for the Supporters Shield.”
