Off DL, top pick Lowe set for reserve duty

"With Kevin it’s still a situation where he’s still working with coming back from his ACL injury, so he’s probably not game ready," coach Sigi Schmid said. "He won’t play in the reserve game. But with Lowe, the reserve game on Monday is going to be very important. We want to see how many minutes he can actually log and how he can play. He’s a pretty aggressive defender. He can be physical, and sometimes I know he has to temper his play a little bit in training with us. But that’s something we want to see now how he does in the game – that ruggedness, and his quickness, and he’s got good pace. He’s definitely our fastest defender. So we want to see how all that correlates and ties together."

I had this conversation with Lowe:

On coming off the DL: I’m working. I’m getting there. I’m not saying I’m 100 percent, but I’m getting there. The trainers have cleared me to practice and stuff, and I’m just under evaluation right now to get back to my fitness level and get back in form. There’s no time on when I’m going to be back. It’s up to the coaches when they think I’m ready. I’m just working hard and trying to get back up to speed.

On if this has been a lost rookie season: It’s not a lost year because we have a team of very good players, so I learn from them a lot. Being on the sideline I watch Chad Marshall, Djimi Traore, watch how they play and try to learn from them. I watch a lot of tape and stuff, so I don’t see it as a lost year. I still got something out of it, and the season isn’t over, so you never know when I’m going to be back.

On seeing a role for the future: There’s always opportunities. We have injuries and stuff here and there. I just want the opportunity to get back out there. And yes, for sure, I’ll show the fans what I have. I know what I’m made of, but I just focus on getting fit right now and getting up to par, and then my time will come.

On if the injury is something that he'll have to manage in the future: I’m fine right now. I’m 21 years old, so that’s good – it’s with me, it’s not against me – so I’ll always have time to recover. I’m doing well. It’s not giving me any trouble, so that’s good.
