It was just one of 19 wins so far this season, but Seattle Sounders FC accomplished a lot with it.
For starters, the Sounders 4-1 win over the Colorado Rapids on Sunday at Dick’s Sporting Good Park was in fact their 19th win of the season. That’s the most in Major League Soccer, and establishes a club record with three games left in the regular season.
The result also moved Seattle (19-9-3) back atop the MLS standings, even with Los Angeles in the points race, but ahead by two in wins, which is the first tie-breaker. However, it had the opposite affect on the Rapids (8-15-8), whose 11th straight winless game knocked them out of the playoff race.
The game also continued a run of individual achievement for Sounders forwards Obafemi Martins and Clint Dempsey.Martins built on his club record with his 16th and 17th goals of the season. The Sounders moved to a perfect 12-0 in games in which Martins scores.
Meanwhile, Clint Dempsey opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the 11th minute and added assisted Marco Pappa’s goal in the 33rd minute. It was Dempsey's eight consecutive match with either a goal or an assist.

Pregame: A reminder that the Sounders and the Rapids start early today: Noon, on JOEtv and the usual radio outlets. We'll also have this blog going before, during and after the match, with more updates and comments on Twitter @donruiztnt.
It's a match where both sides really need the full three points. And in Colorado's case, really need them: anything less than a win eliminates the Rapids from the Western Conference playoff race. Meanwhile, the Sounders need three points to return even with the LA Galaxy at the top of the table, and they could sure use another win to keep that first tie-breaker advantage.
