Whitecaps' Fernandez voted MLS player of week

LogoMLS Vancouver midfielder Sebastian Fernandez has been voted MLS player of the week. However, he will miss the Whitecaps' Friday visit to Seattle due to yellow-card accumulation.

Here's the report from the league:

Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder Sebastián Fernández was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 30 of the 2014 MLS regular season.

Sebastián Fernández scored both of the goals in Vancouver’s 2-0 win over FC Dallas helping keep his team’s playoff hopes alive. Fernández’s first goal came in the 14th minute of the game. After a period of buildup play from the Whitecaps FC, the ball was played out right to midfielder Mauro Rosales who sent a first-time cross into the box that was met with a header by Fernández. The precision ball squeezed into the top left corner with little space for the opposing goalkeeper to get a hand on it.

Four minutes later, Fernández got his second goal to put the Blue and White ahead 2-0. After stealing the ball near the midfield line, Rosales countered through wide open space finding on oncoming Fernández. Controlling the ball in the penalty area with one touch, Fernández measured his shot powering it in at the near post.

The Whitecaps FC will hit the road to take on Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders FC Friday at 10:00 p.m. ET (NBCSN, TSN).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
