The Soudners trained for the first time this week, knowing who they'll play this weekend in the aggregate-score Western Conference semifinal: FC Dallas, which knocked out Vancouver last night, 2-1.
The Sounders will visit FC Dallas at 6 p.m. Sunday, with the resolution game coming up Nov. 10 at CenturyLink Field.
Here's some of what coach Sigi Schmid had to say today:
On the Dallas-Whitecaps match: It was good. Obviously there was some discussion over the PK call at the end of the game. I thought in the first half Dallas was the better team. In the second half, I think Vancouver was a little bit the better team. But that’s what it is in playoffs, sometimes a weird play comes to change the game.
On if Vancouver would have been an advantage due to travel: It doesn’t matter to us. We’re going through the discussions now. We’ve got our travel sorted away, but it’s something for the future I think our league needs to look at a little bit: when they coordinate when they plan those trips. It’s sometimes difficult to get done at the last minute.
On if there would have been an advantage in Dallas traveling first on short week: You always want to play the second game at home, I think, because if there’s overtime, if there’s penalty kicks, you want that to happen in front of your crowd.
On if new MLS rule favoring away goals changes the approach: No. It’s not like you’re going to throw everything forward looking for goals because you’re away from home. I think we’re going to play the same way. We’ve been a good road team. We’ve got to continue to play that way. The main thing is coming out of Game 1 making sure that you have a chance to win it all in Game 2.
On the limited work by Clint Dempsey: Dempsey just had a bruise on his foot where he took a bad hit in the game. I could tell you who, but you know, the league never cares. He took a pretty bad bruise. (Schmid indicated there's no question about Dempsey's availability for Sunday.)
