Seattle Reign FC (5-2-2, 17 pts) continued its home unbeaten streak with a pair of second half goals in a matchup against FC Kansas City (3-5-2, 11 pts) on Saturday, June 27 in front of a crowd of 3,331 on the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium.
Seattle extended its undefeated streak at Memorial Stadium to 18 games with the result — dating back to the start of the 2014 season — while bringing its season unbeaten streak to six games.
That six game stretch has occurred while Seattle has been without its pair of U.S. Women's National Team players: forward Megan Rapinoe and goalkeeper Hope Solo.
"I think the fact that we've been unbeaten while the World Cup players have been away have been a huge credit to this team," head coach Laura Harvey said.
Reign FC dominated possession throughout the first half and had several near misses on goal.
In the 23rd minute, a cross into the box from defender Kendall Fletcher was gathered by midfielder Kim Little, who then fired a deflected shot at FCKC goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. Midfielder Jessica Fishlock's rebound sailed over the crossbar.
Eight minutes later, Little again came up just short, firing a shot off the foot of Barnhart after passing three players on her way into the box.
Just before first half stoppage time, Fishlock had another shot on goal, with Barnhart flicking her attempt over the crossbar.
Forward Beverly Yanez broke the tie in the 62nd minute, fighting for and winning a ball in the box, before slotting it under Barnhart to give Seattle the advantage.
Less than two minutes later, Little made it a two-score lead, bringing down a ball in front of the goal from forward Danielle Foxhoven, and firing a shot into the net.
In the 90th minute, FC Kansas City got one back with a late goal from forward Shea Groom, but that's as close as FCKC would get. However, the team wasn't thrilled to lose the clean sheet in the game's waning moments.
"We all kind of were upset with ourselves," goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer said.
With the win, Seattle now has 17 points in the NWSL standings, tied for first place in the league with the Washington Spirit.
Saturday’s game was the second and final match up of the regular season between Seattle and FCKC. During the first meeting at Swope Soccer Village on April 23, FC Kansas City came away with a 1-0 victory.
Reign FC will now head back on the road to face the Western New York Flash on July 3 at Sahlen's Stadium in their second meeting of the season. The two sides will again face-off on July 11 on the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. That match will also serve as the homecoming for United States Women’s National Team goalkeeper Hope Solo and forward Megan Rapinoe.
