Toronto’s Sebastian Giovinco was voted MLS player of the month for August today. However, Seattle fans may not be able to see him Saturday due to an adductor injury that caused him to be returned from the Italy national team.
Here is the news release from MLS:
Toronto FC forward Sebastian Giovinco was voted Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month by fans on MLSsoccer.com for the month of August for the 2015 MLS season.
Giovinco becomes the first player to earn back-to-back Player of the Month selections this season. In six matches during the month of August, the dynamic forward turned in four goals and three assists, boosting Toronto FC into fourth place in the Eastern Conference (11-10-4, 37 points). For the season, Giovinco ranks second in MLS in goals (17) and is tied for second in assists (13). With his remarkable performances for Toronto, Italian National Team head coach Antonio Conte rewarded Giovinco with a call up for an upcoming pair of 2016 EURO qualifiers; however, an abductor injury will prevent him from representing the Azzurri this week.
After being held in check during TFC’s August 1 showdown with the New England Revolution, Giovinco exploded with a prolific performance against Orlando City SC on August 5. He opened the scoring by converting a penalty kick in the 12th minute, curled an AT&T Goal of the Week-winning free kick into the upper corner at the 56-minute mark, and secured his second hat-trick of the season with a left-footed strike in the 88th minute.
Giovinco again terrorized Orlando City SC on August 22, recording a goal and assist in TFC’s 5-0 win. The Atomic Ant doubled the Reds’ lead in the 56th minute by smashing another long-range free kick past keeper Tally Hall, banking it in off the far post. Later, in the 71st minute, Giovinco helped engineer a picturesque scoring opportunity for Justin Morrow, who tapped in Toronto’s third goal.
Toronto FC returns to MLS action this Saturday, when it visits Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field 10:00 p.m. ET (TSN2).
Voting for MLS Player of the Month presented by Etihad is open to the public. The five final nominees are chosen by MLSsoccer.com editorial staff.
